IFWG is very pleased to announce that as of October 2021, David Bowles’ middle grade fantasy, The Smoking Mirror (Book 1 of his Garza Twins Series) has exceeded 30,000 print sales in North America. This is on top of winning an American Library Association Honor (Belpre), and being picked up as elective text for a significant number of elementary schools. IFWG is also proud of publishing a series that has Hispanic teens as the central protagonists, with strong Aztec ancestry.
Congratulations, David, for this amazing achievement!
Speculative Fiction House IFWG Publishing International Set to Open Comic-Book Arm in 2021: “IPI Comics, with Christopher Sequeira as Editor-In-Chief”
16 DECEMBER 2020: Successful independent fantasy, horror and science fiction house IFWG Publishing International (including IFWG Publishing Australia) will open a comic-book and graphic novel division in 2021, it was announced today by publisher Gerry Huntman.
Huntman also announced he has selected conceptualist, writer, and editor Christopher Sequeira to be IPI Comics’ Editor-In-Chief.
Sequeira stated: “I am thrilled to be helping establish IPI for Gerry as a comics and graphic novel publisher. The ambit is very simple—just a few projects at a time to start with, then slowly and carefully grow with an emphasis on series that become trade paperback collections. However, as with everything IFWG’s prose line has accomplished thus far, this is going to be about quality before quantity. If there’s an ethos for my setting up projects, it’s that no IPI Comic will be a ‘bad read’, or rushed through production to hit a meaningless release date. So, we’ll solicit when things are at an appropriate stage of readiness. We want to give customers a basis for a high degree of confidence. As far as genres go, we’ll do all my faves; superheroes, horror, science fiction, fantasy, and maybe some stuff just on the periphery, if we are sure we can reach the right readers.
“I have a few really talented creators I’ve reached out to who are readying some material, and if we get momentum we might open submissions up in late 2021. There’s even a couple of properties we’ve talked about licensing if we can bring the right approach to them, but I have to say, when I think licences I think of some pretty quirky stuff, rather than stuff that’s done to death; we want to get people a little off guard. And in the spirit of comics EiC/bosses from Stan Lee to Carmine Infantino to the present day, if there’s a series I’m writing that might make sense to be at IFWG, I’ll bring it to Gerry Huntman for consideration.”
Sequeira conceptualises, edits and writes for IFWG’s prose ‘sub-imprint’ ‘Imagine That…’ with the well received alternate reality anthology titles SHERLOCK HOLMES AND DOCTOR WAS NOT, and the forthcoming DRACULA UNFANGED. Also, with editors-in-arms Steve Proposch and Bryce Stevens, he also co-produces the CTHULHU DEEP DOWN UNDER (three volumes, third release first half 2021) and CTHULHU LAND OF THE LONG WHITE CLOUD prose collections, and these Editors Three are excited that their landmark CAPED FEAR: Horror Stories of Superhumans will be appearing from IFWG in mid-2021 with a bevy of internationally acclaimed writers.
Sequeira has written for Black House Comics, Frew Publications, Marvel, DC, Dynamite, Boom Studios, Caliber Entertainment, and even edited and published Australia-wide under his own Sequence comics brand. For a joint publishing venture between Black House and IFWG he conceptualised, edited and wrote for the initial SUPERAUSTRALIANS graphic novel chapter-novel, which gets international release in 2021 in an expanded edition.

Louis K Lowy, one of IFWG’s earliest and most prolific authors, has recently released a masterful, insightful short video on the background and context of his early novel, Die Laughing. We know you will enjoy this too.
IFWG is pleased to reveal the cover for David Bowles‘ fourth instalment in his Garza Twins 5-part middle grade series, Wings Above the Burning Earth. Yet again, wonderful work by artist and designer, Charlene Bowles, following the pattern of using a dominant colour to represent the setting and themes in each book.
Bowles recently wrote an excellent article describing the genesis (and journey) of the Garza Twins series. It is fascinating reading.
For those who are not familiar with this series, think about acquiring the award-winning and best selling first novel, The Smoking Mirror.
Over the past few days, with increasing virus activity throughout the world, and the knock-on effects on people’s livelihoods and the world economy, IFWG has decided on a number of changes to our production, distribution and marketing arrangements for as long as this crisis exists.
When facing something as serious as COVID-19, we can choose to panic, capitulate, exclusively react to events as they play out, or MANAGE our business as logically and proactively as possible. We choose to control our destiny, and work within a manageable business model, and at the same time, do everything we can to support our authors, artists and staff.
Consequently, with effect immediately, the following changes have taken place:
1. We will delay release of every upcoming new title until the marketplace is healthy again, and people are able to purchase our books.
2. However, we intend to work on getting our books print ready as if there was no delay in release. We want to carry on producing these wonderful books and have them waiting in queue for release when the crisis is over. We will announce the completion of each print-ready title as per normal.
3. We were planning on a short story call-out in May, along with a supplementary crowd-funding exercise—the book was scheduled for February 2021. We will still make the callout, and pay authors soon after, but we will move the crowd funding (for enhanced illustrations only) until after the crisis is over.
For those of you who have preordered Silent Sorrow by Russell Kirkpatrick, we will honour the offer and supply the book to you before 1 June 2020.
We know many of you will be disappointed, but we hope, on reflection, you recognise that this move is the best way forward. We refuse to be paralysed at this time… we will manage this through.
One of the profound things I find about our time on this planet is the amazing human capacity to withstand trauma and disease and hold on to their lives, and yet there are many others who pass way too early, often suddenly. There’s nothing mysterious about it, but it can help us refocus on how important it is to make the most of the time we have.
It is with immense sadness that I announce the passing of Grace Chan (Elizabeth Lang) today (27th February 2020) in Regina, Saskatchewan, from complications associated with her very long battle with cancer.
It is with great pride and satisfaction, that we announce the release of Larry Ivkovich‘s final instalment of his Spirit Winds Quartet series of novels, Return of the Luminous One. “This has been a long journey,” said Gerry Huntman, Managing Director IFWG, “and Larry was one of our first authors when we published the first of the series, The Sixth Precept. This series grabbed our attention from the start – an urban fantasy with deep roots in Japanese Mythology, action, time-travel, you name it. And a wonderful set of protagonists, centred around Kim Yoshima.”
The final exciting volume in The Spirit Winds Quartet finds Kim Yoshima and her friends, Wayne Brewster, Jenny and Lazo Siboluvich, the sorceress Daiyu, Joe Martin, ArcNight, the shapeshifting felinoid Jaraal, David Amamoto, and the renegade Maghi, Amedio Zaranelli, racing against time to prevent a catastrophe of cosmic proportions.
Same old, same old for Kim.
Except for one thing. The mysterious Void, source of the Spirit Winds, has finally revealed itself, exerting its own numinous influence on the multiverse. It is ancient, profoundly powerful, and frighteningly familiar. But is its purpose for good or for evil?
And what of the Maghi and the demon Orcus? Who is really behind their monstrous evil?
Some will live. Some will die. Some will be forever changed. But, this time, the stakes are much, much higher. For, if Kim and her comrades fail, the multiverse will be irrevocably altered.
Return of the Luminous One is now available in print and ebook format in all good online and print stores.
IFWG Publishing is proud and excited to acquire world-wide Spanish publishing rights for the middle grade fantasy Garza Twins series by David Bowles. “We have had outstanding success with David’s series,” said Gerry Huntman, Managing Director of IFWG, “and the five books deserve to be read by Spanish-speaking readers the world over, and those who are students of the language. We are looking forward to Book 1 The Smoking Mirror – an ALA Honor awarded title – to be released in the first half of 2020.”
The series will be translated by Libia Brenda (outstanding writer and Spanish language scholar based in Mexico) and edited by Silvia Brown, Spanish-born author and editor, resident in Australia. A new set of cover art designs will be commissioned for the Spanish-language series, by the same talented artist and designer, Charlene Bowles.
Over here in IFWG Publishing we’ve been waiting a long time to read Larry Ivkovich‘s final instalment of his ‘The Spirit Winds Quartet’, Return of the Luminous One. What a journey, what a delectable mash of time travelling, fantasy, mythologies, Japanese feudalism, and so much more. All tied together with the amazing protagonist, Kim Yoshima.
Great cover work, continuing from books 1 to 4, by Elizabeth Lang.
We are pleased to announce that Return of the Luminous One will be released on November 15, 2019. Preorder arrangements will be announced soon. Continue reading →
It is with pleasure to announce that Louis K Lowy‘s latest novel, The Second Life of Eddie Coyne, is now released and available in all good bookstores, bricks and mortar, and online. “Louis has been an amazing partner with IFWG,” said Gerry Huntman, Managing Director of the company, “and we have published a variety of genres and literary titles with him. This is the first fantasy piece – albeit in a contemporary/urban setting – and we can’t be more delighted. This novel is insightful, inventive, and very intense. All lovers of speculative fiction will love it.”
Eddie Coyne loves playing the horses. Loves it so much it’s ruining his relationship with his wife and six-year-old son. In a last ditch effort to prove he’s not a loser in their eyes, Eddie places a seemingly impossible bet on a long shot and hits pay dirt.
But before he can cash in and make amends with his family, he’s thrown down an escalator and left for dead by a greedy hoodlum looking to cash in on Eddie’s winnings. Dying, Eddie wakes up in the presence of the Jesses, a monolithic group of six whose job it is to decide who enters heaven and who enters hell. The Jesses tell Eddie he’s stuck in the middle—not good enough for heaven, not bad enough for hell. They entice him to go in on one final bet to break the dead heat.
If he triumphs, they stamp his ticket to paradise. If he loses, he spends eternity in the netherworld. The bet? Eddie must prevent someone chosen by the Jesses from taking their own life. Thinking it will be a piece of cake, Eddie agrees. He quickly learns the Jesses are more cunning than he’d imagined.
The Second Life of Eddie Coyne is available in print now, and stay tuned for ebook formats in coming days.
