A Word From The Editor

May is now gone – nearly halfway through the year, and there is still much for IFWG Publishing/IFWG Publishing Australia to do. The Pouakai by David Sperry is going well, and we expect it to be published in the next month or so. We are also starting to ramp up the Ursus the Bear children’s book – stay tuned on that beauty. Buxacan Spicerunner will continue in earnest. Sealskin Coast and Brumbies in the Outback, as promised, are now published, and we are very happy with both titles.

A Word From The Editor

With a great number of back office tasks now completed, including sorting out our complex royalties regime, and migration to three critical new websites (ifwgpublishing, ifwgaustralia, and sqmag), we are now working hard on a number of projects in earnest. Sealskin Coast is literally a few days away from publishing, and Brumbies in the Outback (Book 4 of the Brumbies series), will follow very soon after. David Sperry’s The Pouakai is nearing proofreading stages, and Warren Goodwin’s Buxacan Spicerunner is in editing stage, and will be transferred to proofreading stage soon. Two children’s books, a fantasy and a science fiction. Not bad.

A Word From The Editor

The month has flown by fast indeed, and IFWG Publishing, along with IFWG Publishing Australia, have been hard at work with our projects. Sealskin Coast is just looking great, currently in the capable hands of excellent proofreaders and cover designers, and David Sperry’s The Pouakai is nearing completion of editing. We take our time to do it right.

Talking about doing it right, despite the fantastic artwork by Isaiah Stephens that had graced an earlier title, the urban fantasy The Sixth Precept by Larry Ivkovich, we have decided to release a new cover for it, designed by Elizabeth Lang. We are sure everyone agrees with us that it is a striking cover.

On behalf of IFWG Publishing Australia, I would like to congratulate their effort – especially Sophie Yorkston – for putting together an amazing selection of speculative short stories, for the forthcoming SQ Mag – Australiana Edition. Getting original fiction from authors like Sean Williams, Kaaron Warren and Alan Baxter, is no mean feat, along with 5 stories by upcoming authors. I know Sophie put a lot of work into this edition, and I for one am looking forward to its release on 1 May 2014.

Until next month, I wish you, and all those close to you, hours of reading enjoyment.

A Word From The Editor

February was a productive month with the release of a new chap-ebook, Impounded (by our prolific Australian author, Paula Boer), an impressive short story about the lifecycle of a Barrumundi fish in northern Australia. We also rereleased Blackthorns of the Forgotten by Bree T Donovan, with a breathtaking cover design by Elizabeth Lang. We have been continuing to work on The Pouakai, Sealskin Coast, and Brumbies in the Outback, and expect all of them to be published in coming months – Sealskin Coast will be the next cab off the rank.

Other projects for 2014 include:

Star Quake 2 – SQ Mag’s best fiction of 2013. This is an annual anthology, and has already garnered respect within the speculative fiction community. As SQ Mag’s standards increase – which is already evident – the anthologies that follow will only be better.

Buxacan Spicerunner – This title, a fantasy high seas adventure, is one of a small group that we have wanted to publish for some time, and is long overdue. We very much look forward to this excellent novel by New Jersey writer, Warren Goodwin.

The Andromedans – the last of The Empire trilogy by Canadian writer, Elizabeth Lang. This series is one of IFWG’s best selling titles, and no doubt many readers are looking forward to it.

Olgreenders’ Search for History – another great title by IFWG’s most prolific author, Texas author, MF Burbaugh.

Two long-anticipated children’s titles: Books for Bedtime – the Adventures of Teddy and Karl, by Australian writer, Rolf Svensen, and illustrator Jeffery E Doherty, and The Adventures of Ursus the Bear, by English writer, Jack Eason (illustrated by New Zealand artist, Frances Hutt).

We will also be reissuing two titles from our US operations to the Australian/UK operations, a more appropriate fit: Against The Elements, by English writer Esme Carpenter, and A Magpie Called Will, by Western Australian, Peter Rondel.

This is a large list, but we are looking very much forward to adding significant value to our catalogues.

The rain has finally ceased here in the UK and the first signs of spring are, well, springing. I’m very excited about the UK English re-release titles (including my own) later this year – until then, there’s plenty to keep you ticking over.

A Word From The Editor

January has passed and IFWG Publishing/IFWG Publishing Australia has been productive.

We published Golden Spinner, written by Jennifer R Resetar with some co-writing by R.A. Knowlton, and wonderful illustrations by John Powers. This work has an interesting history. A few years ago we published a title called Whirl Wind, a super-hero story about a boy who has a disability and discovers he has super powers. He starts to right wrongs in his city of Atlanta, and also helps sort out bullying in his school. A sub-theme of this story was that his super powers were not key in the stopping of bullying, rather, his strength of conviction and understanding. This book had to be retired because we discovered that there were copyright issues with the super hero’s name (totally unintentional, and a reflection of our litigious times). This gave us all an opportunity to improve on this work, and we didn’t know it at the time, a virtually new book emerged. Books in fact.

Golden Spinner is a vastly improved version of Whirl Wind, and in fact contains two children’s story. The super hero elements are now a backdrop, not the main thrust of the stories, and its focus is entirely on bullying. This is a topical subject in society today and it often leads to tragic consequences. We are very happy indeed to support the production of a title that contributes to reducing bullying in our world, and in particular the school environment. The presentation of the book (cover and illustrations) are reminiscent of comic-book super hero stories, which is intentional – it makes the story easier to read and more attractive to the 11 to 14 year target group. It has very clear messages for children, and has something to say to parents. We hope you all can spread the word on this title.

Continuing our support for our authors, we published the seventh in our Chap-eBook series in January, Dragon Hunter, by MF Burbaugh. A great short story, saucy-but-nice, full of epic fantasy.

There are three projects coming to a conclusion soon, keeping us busy.

In IFWG Publishing (US/International), we are closing the editing of The Pouakai, a science fiction thriller by David Sperry. We acquired the services of the great illustrator, Steve Santiago, for the cover art.

For IFWG Publishing Australia, we are currently editing Sealskin Coast by author and illustrator, Rowena Evans. This older children’s story is beautifully written and the artwork (cover, internal and highlighting fonts) are interpreted in art deco style. This is one to watch, if not for the story, then the great artwork and cover. In only a matter of weeks we will begin editing the fourth book in the five-part Brumbies Series, Brumbies in the Outback. We anticipate its release in May/June (and the final instalment late in 2014). We all know how wonderful the covers are for the first three books, and Elizabeth Lang will be continuing her great work with this title.

We have continued to slowly, but surely, create new covers for some of our older titles. So far, we have ‘revamped’ Circle of Seven by MF Burbaugh, The Okapi Promise by Paula Boer, Blood Contract by Biola Olatunde, and A Magpie Called Will by Peter Rondel and illustrated by Frances Hutt. Thanks again to Elizabeth Lang for some sterling work over recent months!

That’s all for now. Next month I will outline some other new titles forthcoming this year.

Newsletter: A Word from the Editor (December 2013)

November was a hectic month for IFWG Publishing/IFWG Publishing Australia and has made up a lot of lost ground from the previous 12 months or so. I would like to share with you some highlights/trends:

Firstly, we fully established the IFWG Publishing Australia imprint, and thus far it has published six titles – the ‘reboot’ of the first two Brumbies books, and the third instalment of the five-book series; Kings of Under-Castle, Paper Magic, and the ‘best of’ anthology of SQ Mag’s 2012 publications, Star Quake 1 (an annual concern). All have been picked up with enthusiasm by readers, and the authors have been very good at assisting with marketing. We are hoping that we can slip in a seventh title before New Year – The Infinity Trap, by Ian C Douglas, a British work, and one that we view as having potential for sale in Australia as much as the UK. Keep your eyes peeled on the IFWG Publishing Australia site, as well as the social media outlets.

IFWG Publishing US is catching up as well, as reported in our last few Newsletters. Loria, The Bounty Hunter, Numen Yeye, Blood Sabers, and Unlikely Hero are highlights, and we are about to publish Sea Lily by Brooke Breazeale and illustrated by David I Faust. This last project has been long in coming, as is often the case when many quality illustrations are required, and when it coincides with our earlier hiatus. This book will be published in full colour – the second time we are doing this, as Constellation Station was our first, wonderful effort.

Perhaps an understated achievement over the last four weeks is the complete overhaul of the IFWG Publishing web site, as well as the blog site. It was clear that we needed to iron out the wrinkles, and wipe the cobwebs off of it. Since the Australian site appeared to be a more workable platform, we bit the bullet and made the move over the last few weeks. It was largely successful as a transition, and all reports are favourable about the end result. We like it. What’s more, we have dramatically improved the commerce functionality of the site, and it is easy to navigate, and pretty easy to purchase our titles on both sites.

The work we have put into our business over recent months has paid off, and we are very optimistic for the coming year. We have some more backlog titles to publish but they are small in number, and we have 2014-scheduled work ahead of us.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a joyous Christmas, and a prosperous New Year.
