Cover Reveal: The Smoking Mirror by David Bowles

While there are a few months before the release of David Bowles’ young teen/middle grade novel, ‘The Smoking Mirror’ (Part 1 of the Garza Twins series), we are delighted to reveal the cover, artwork and design by David’s daughter, Charlene. We were delighted with Charlene’s design and its appropriateness to the target age group of this novel.

The following is a taste of what’s in store:

Carol and Johnny Garza are 12-year-old twins whose lives in a small Texas town are forever changed by their mother’s unexplained disappearance. Shipped off to relatives in Mexico by their grieving father, the twins soon learn that their mother is a nagual, a shapeshifter, and that they have inherited her powers. In order to rescue her, they will have to descend into the Aztec underworld and face the dangers that await them.

A Word From The Editor

Welcome to 2015! Our batteries are recharged, and we have a lot of publishing scheduled for the year ahead. And all of it is exciting:

  • We have several children’s books slotted, the majority will be published in the first quarter of 2015. Similarly, we have some great middle grade and young adult titles forthcoming in all quarters.
  • We have a number of titles whose sequels or next in line in ongoing series, will be released throughout the year.
  • And finally, we have a good number of titles by new authors to IFWG.

All the details are available in the ‘Forthcoming Titles’ pages of our two sites: IFWG Publishing and IFWG Publishing Australia. You will see the list is quite impressive.

Of particular note is IFWG Publishing Australia’s publication of the complete ghost story short fiction of Robert Hood, titled Peripheral Visions. This represents thirty years of short stories, novelettes and novella’s by one of Australia’s great horror writers, and much respected by horror fans (and the industry) around the world. This work is immense – over 200k of ghost fiction. The work is so large we are publishing the trade paperback in two volumes (penciled in for April and May, respectively), as well as a single volume hardcover version, each chapter illustrated by the great artist, Nick Stathopoulos, multiple Archibald Award short listed artist. We will also be selling (mostly through pre-order facility) a limited number of the hardcover books with a number sequence and Robert Hood’s signature – this will be a much sought-after edition. I will be saying more about this book over coming weeks through social media, including the cover reveals, and notification when the ‘deluxe’ edition will be for sale.

SQ Mag is ever on the rise. In 2015 the eZine will continue to publish new talent, and stories from other underrepresented groups, in the speculative fiction fields, with the periodic injection of well-established writers – all work is original. We were very fortunate to be able to commission a novelette by Laird Barron for our January 2015 edition, and we will be announcing other top quality writers in the future. Our May edition will, as usual, be themed and announcements will be made shortly through the SQ Mag site and social media. We already have Angela Slatter slotted for that edition.

I hope that you join us in this great adventure in 2015.
